The Saturday before Easter Death Reigns

On this day,
Jesus is dead.
His body lies
In a dank, stone hole
Sealed against the light.
A part of God is dead.

The Trinity is broken.
The Creator holds the breath of life,
But the stench of death
Fills the tomb.
Without the Word,
The Comforter is bereft.
Tomorrow,
Life will conquer death.
Jesus will rise
With the promise
Of resurrection for all,
But not this day.
This day death reigns.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day dawns with anticipation.
What waits under the tree?
There will be turkey and ham,
Sweet potatoes, corn on the cob,
Green beans and steaming rolls,
And desserts galore.
Family and friends gather
To enjoy the food,
And the company.
Amid the festivities
We shall light the Advent wreath.
And the Christ Candle
To commemorate the true meaning of Christmas.
Over two thousand years ago,
God chose to put as much of himself as he could
Into human form.
To experience his creation from within.
To experience all that it means to be human.
To experience death.
Death.
Only that God could not know,
As Christ he could.
He understands the bitter grief
Of separation caused by death.
The Comforter holds our hand
Through life and death
With the knowledge gained by Jesus.
Thank you,
God,
For stooping so low.
Thank you for the promise
That after death
There is so much more.

Renewal

"This is the day which the Lord hath made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it."

Life moves on;
The wish for oblivion fades.
Life is bearable,
But still sad.
Each day must be faced alone.
Friends do not comprehend
That hope is fragile,
Too easily crushed.
The crisis gone,
Their lives engulf them.
I am alone.
God's presence is lost,
But his promise of renewal
Is still with me.
Each day
I recite this Psalm
And face the dawn.
